The human body, like all living beings, is governed by physical and chemical laws that ensure a certain balance in energy metabolism. This state is constantly disrupted by diet, physical and mental hygiene, and our emotional relationship with the outside world—all destabilizing factors for both body and mind. These factors must then be rebalanced using the network of energy meridians that constitute us.
The body comprises several levels of functioning and therefore of understanding. The most commonly used are those of the five elements and the four layers.
The first is the basis of energy regulation throughout the year, the oldest, derived directly from the yin/yang system, and governed by the generating cycle (Shen), which nourishes, and the controlling cycle (Ke), which tempers. The second multi-level system is composed of the defensive layer (Wei) on the surface, the Chi layer of the functional organs, the deeper nourishing layer (Ying), and the blood layer (Xue) at the very heart of the body's fluids.
While the Five Elements represent the surface interactions, the four energetic layers describe the depth of energy within the body. They serve as protective barriers against external pathogenic aggressions (wind, cold, heat, and humidity).
